Description

In the early days I too crossed the same route as Uncle Nick. While reading of the opposition encountered by the riders and agents of the Pony Express my memory recalls in retrospect every station and the scenes of every tragedy mentioned in The White Indian Boy. Later I explored the hunting and battle grounds occupied by the Indians with whom the White Indian Boy spent the first two years of his nomadic life, and the accuracy of illustrations of Indian camps and hunting scenes are remarkable. -- Wm. J. McConnell, former Governor of Idaho

This series of three books was the best I have ever read on the life, customs, traditions and culture of these tribes! These authors speak frankly of their relations with these tribes and to become one in itself is fascinating. The Native American Indian has loves and hates as does anyone. Tears and feelings for loved ones is real. The gradual incrouchment on Indian lands and the destruction of the buffalo would spell the end to this way of life. The Indian would fight back anyway they could and in ways which seem more than barbaric to many a Christian thinking people. White and Indian cataclysmic eventual collision is well told in these three books!

Enjoyable books? Yes, there are three complete books in this title. I have read them and am grateful that they are available to us.

It is fascinating to read accounts of mountain men, rangers and Indians written by the men who live out the stories in their actual lifetimes. Two of the stories were written by men who actually lived with the Indians, one of them went out in war parties against enemy tribes.

The books have some typos but none that one of average intelligence can''t handle and they did not decrease my enjoyment of the books. Amazon has a lot of these books written in earlier eras, and Guttenberg Press has many of them.

Don''t be surprised if you are disappointed with our modern generations after you have read about these folks who lived 100 to 200 years ago. Don''t be surprised if you need to consult the Kindle dictionary on many words that common farmers knew and use in olden days. Apparently they were somewhat more literate than we.

This is a long read since three books are included in the bundle and at times it becomes rather tedious to scan the rambling convoluted writing style and grammar of the authors. Occasionally the recounts are repetitive, even boring especially in book two (Schultz) but lend authenticity to the storytelling. Book three (Lee) is much more engaging. Overall the books are complementary, informative and insightful.

I leave this review primarily to keep me from mistakenly ordering this 6-part book again. The namesake part (part one) was very interesting. The book began going downhill when it began being other people''s stories. I lost interest during part 2, and quit reading the book before reaching the 50% mark. 3-Stars was being generous.

Nick, though a simple man had many amazing experiences. From living with the Shoshones, riding for the Pony Express, driving for the Overland stage, scouting and interpreting for the army, trapping, fighting hostile Indians and outlaws, enduring arrow and bullet wounds, and surviving blizzards and starvation, to founded a town named after him, Nick Wilson deserves to be remembered as an integral and important part of the old west. I was privileged to know Charlie, his son, during the 80''s. Charlie was featured in a 1980 National Geographic Mag article on the Pony Express. Here''s a real kicker. From me to Charlie, to his father Nick, to his friend Morogonai who traded with Lewis and Clark in 1805 is only four generations! How young is our nation and how far we''ve come in 200 years...

The fashion was to make a super hero from the white and a savage from the Natives who had cheap mothers and raised loose daughters for the White to have fight and fun with...though the books is acceptable at the beginning it shows how faithless and mean the whites are because he who was raised like a child and treated equal to a beloved son, joined the military to show them the way to the Natives who wanted nothing but their rights and were treated like beasts.
